These days it’s common for regular furniture shops to offer
more premium ranges of furniture to appeal to buyers with a lot of disposable
income. However, these expensive ranges still cannot compete with the products
that furniture manufacturers make.
When it comes to quality, nothing is better than the kind of
products made by a skilled craftsman. This is because they have many years of
experience and first hand knowledge on the best manufacturing techniques. All
custom furniture manufacturers make their products by hand. This means you can
be sure that these many years of experience and the knowledge acquired as a
result is put to good use.
On the other hand, when you buy from a standard shop,
department store or even order online, the products are often made quickly,
cheaply and by a robot rather than the skilled hands of a craftsman. Even the
most expensive products are made in this way, as they would rather add higher
margins to a product than produce something beautiful and long lasting!
The other key difference between custom and standard furniture
manufacturers is the materials used in the product itself. Often, shop bought
products are produced to a lower quality because of their cheap materials which
are used to cut costs and boost margins. Frequently, cheap MDF is used with a
vinyl coating added with a fake wood effect. But what is this? Basically, MDF
is recycled woodchips glued together to make boards. Then, a plastic coating is
added with a wood effect printed on. This gives the illusion of real wood from
a distance, but actually up close it looks cheap.
Meanwhile, by going to a workshop you can be sure that your
furniture is produced from real wood. If you specify pine, beech or oak, you
can be sure the item will be built using that material! This is good peace of
mind and ensures that you’re getting a
high quality product.
Additional ornaments on the product also vary. Shop bought
ones often use cheap plastic to add details to an item. Meanwhile if you go
straight to custom furniture manufacturers, with the right brief they can
produce a table or a chair with more expensive ornamental features which could
include exotic metals, fabrics or even jewel encrusted features! The
possibilities really are endless!
Finally, consider how the furniture will be used. The
finished article really needs to be strong, hard wearing and withstand daily
use. Unfortunately, under normal circumstances products bought from a high
street or out of town interior design shop usually fall short of this basic
expectation of quality. Products are likely to last only for around one to two
years of regular and repeated use due to the low quality materials and
manufacturing techniques.
Custom furniture manufactures on the other hand can produce items that last
much longer and withstand a daily beating. Again, this is thanks to high
quality materials and better manufacturing techniques. Additionally, by letting
the craftsman know how you intend to use the product, he can ensure it is built
to the appropriate standard to allow this.
